My Marrakech Top 10 … Marrakech, Morocco
- Riad Azoulay is where we stayed for the first couple of days. The Riad is a paradise hidden amongst the spice markets and souks of the medina and has been stunningly decorated by its Italian owners. We were looked after brilliantly and I cannot wait to go back!
- Jemaa el-Fna and souks are a ‘must visit.’ The square is full of snake charmers and ladies offering henna tattoos. At night it transforms with music and dancing so try to see it in dark and light but keep your wits about you. The souks are fascinating too with street upon street of Aladdin’s caves selling everything from fake handbags to tea pots to pottery. It’s great fun to explore and shop! Make sure you know what you’re prepared to pay for something before you barter and don’t be afraid to challenge the price or you’ll get ripped off!
- Le Jardin, Cafe des Epices or Nomad are all great places to stop for a drink or eat lunch when you’re exploring in the Médina. Try pigeon pastilla or a fresh fruit juice.
- Le Jardin Secret is small but perfectly formed. The garden and pavilion have been lovingly restored and it’s a little oasis in the middle of the souks.
- Le Grand Cafe de la Poste gives diners the real Casablanca experience. The food is fabulous and it’s a really glamorous evening out.
- El Badi Palace is unbelievable. I’ve never seen such in tact ruins and the sunken gardens are beautiful. It was the most surprising of our cultural visits and I’d highly recommend.
- Majorelle Garden and YSL Museum are beautiful and fascinating for both fashionistas and culture vultures alike. The new museum is amazing and the collection of haute couture designs should not be missed.
- Dar Yacout was my favourite place but make sure you’re hungry when you go! It’s a set menu of Moroccan dishes such as salads, chicken and lamb plus dessert and sweets! Wine is also included which you don’t get in many places and there was great music and entertainment.
- Le Trou au Mur had literally just opened when we went but had already earned a reputation as one of the places to go. The menu is international comfort food and forgotten Moroccan favourites. I recommend trying Tride, a traditional dish with pancakes and lentils.
- Latitude 31 is another hidden gem. It’s a really cool restaurant featuring a Moroccan menu with a modern feel. Sometimes has alcohol but not always.
